3 Peaks Challenge: Day 1 17/06

We were up with the dawn chorus for a 4am departure, bleary eyed and filled with the anticipation of the challenges ahead. A 508 mile journey stretched ahead of us, but copious cups of coffee, Laura’s spectacular flapjacks and far too many sweets kept us going. A pit stop at the Scottish border was an ideal photo opportunity and the first time our 2 young companions had been so far from home.

From here on in we were treated to spectacular views of Scotland, and as we moved further towards our first destination there was a noticeable change in the weather and by the time we had arrived at our first campsite Glen Nevis, the rain was beating down and the temperature had dropped. Welcome to Scotland! Perhaps the thick fog that had descended and obscured our view of what awaited us the following day was a good thing – especially as we saw a number of exhausted, wet and hobbling fellow campers who had already been introduced to the formidable Ben Nevis!!

Tents pitched and hankering for a good meal we headed into Fort William to load up on carbs ready for an early night…but the sheer volume of water on the ground after a month of non-stop rain here meant we weren’t convinced it would be a dry night..we were right! Some middle of the night tent flooding, air bed deflating and search for higher ground meant it wasn’t the best night sleep for our girls!
